Algologist

Algologist

An algologist is a physician who treats pain – they know the causes of pain, the mechanisms of its existence and chronicity, and the methods of treating pain.

An algologist most often treats chronic (more than three months), moderate or severe pain, but an algologist can also be consulted for acute pain.

The algologist during the consultation will:

  • will thoroughly examine the patient, ask about symptoms, course of the disease, previous treatment and its results, investigations, factors affecting the psycho-emotional perception of pain;

  • carry out an objective examination, and if necessary, prescribe additional investigations;

  • draw up an individualised treatment plan.

When you visit an algologist, you should bring the data of previous examinations and tests, if possible, try to remember previous treatment and medications you have taken.

One of the basic principles of pain medicine is to listen carefully to the patient in order to find the right treatment for them, because pain is an individual experience and only a personalised approach will have the greatest effect.

The treatment of chronic pain is often based on drug therapy, but it is slightly different from the therapy used to treat acute pain. As medicine evolves, new therapies are applied, and new properties and uses are discovered for old medications that have proven to be effective in treating pain.

If necessary, the algologist will supplement the classical drug therapy with various blocks, which aim to administer the medication close to the nerve, thus relieving pain and inflammation, as well as perform prolotherapy, barbotage or other methods.
