Aesthetic orthopaedics

Correction of asymmetries and deformities of the extremities

Straight legs, an easy gait and a statuesque figure are not only the standard of beauty, but also the foundation of health. The curvature, length and symmetry of the extremities have functional significance. Changes in the biomechanical axis resulting from extremity deformities increase the risk of various injuries, diseases of the joints and impaired mobility over time.

Both congenital and acquired deformities and asymmetries can be corrected with aesthetic orthopaedics and deformity correction. Correction can be done both in children and adults. The need for correction is assessed by a specialist during a consultation.

Reconstructive orthopaedics of the extremities is performed surgically with external fixation, including orthopaedic hexapods.

Indications for correction of deformities:

  • leg curvature defects (X- and O-shaped legs);

  • extremity length defects (also in case of achondroplasia);

  • congenital or acquired extremity deformities (also in children):

  • deformity caused by ununited or incorrectly healed fractures;

  • various bone defects;

  • cases of contractures of the talocrural joint.

Duration of surgery:
 up to 2 hours, with spinal or full anaesthesia, stay in the clinic – 24 hours.
Follow-up visit: 7 days after surgery. Checks, measurements and information on adjusting the external fixation appliance at home are carried out during the consultation.

Time required for correction: 3–4 months on average from the time of surgery until the external fixation device is removed.

Aids: Crutches. Gradually increasing the load, the patient starts to move independently. Sparing regimen should be followed after surgery.
