Duplex ultrasound examination of blood vessels

Duplex ultrasound examination of blood vessels

Doppler ultrasound of blood vessels uses high frequency sound waves – ultrasound to obtain waves. However, the device not only shows the anatomical images of the examined structures, but registers blood flow direction and velocity, enabling conclusions on the changes in blood vessels caused by diseases and functional condition of blood vessels. Doppler ultrasound helps diagnosing various congenital and acquired abnormalities of blood vessel system, namely, stenosis of blood vessels and obstruction of arteries, as well as atypical curves, arteries affected by atherosclerosis, varicose veins, venous return disorders, venous thromboses, etc.

The performance of the following examinations is possible:

  • Ultrasound (USG) of the blood vessels of brain and neck;

  • USG of veins and arteries of arms and legs.

Considering easy access to the arteries of the neck, duplex ultrasound is very important and easy methodology for all patients in whom atherosclerotic changes of blood vessels of the heart are suspected.

Duplex ultrasound of the arteries and veins of the legs are performed in patients with suspected venous insufficiency of leg veins. Potential atherosclerotic stenoses in the leg arteries are also detected during the test. Stenoses of leg arteries are especially characteristic for patients, who smoke. Subjectively, the patients complain of pain in their calf muscles during physical exercise, which is called claudication.
