Eye ultrasound – a safe and precise eye examination
What is eye ultrasound?
Eye ultrasound is a painless diagnostic method that uses sound waves to obtain detailed images of the structures of the eye. It helps to assess both the anterior and deeper parts of the eye, even if they are not visible during a standard eye examination. Safe for both children and adults.
How is eye ultrasound performed?
During the procedure, the patient sits or lies down, and a special gel is applied to the eyelid or directly on the surface of the eye to improve the transmission of ultrasound waves. A small probe is then used to carefully examine the eye.
B-scan – for evaluation of the deep structures of the eye and orbit.
A-scan – for determining the length of the eye and other parameters.
The examination usually takes 10–20 minutes, depending on the scope of the assessment.
What can be determined with eye ultrasound?
Eye size and shape.
The condition of the retina, vitreous body, and optic nerve.
Changes not visible with other eye examination methods.
Eye ultrasound helps diagnose:
Retinal detachment.
Vitreous hemorrhages or changes.
Tumors in the eye or orbit.
Foreign bodies.
Optic nerve damage.
Changes after eye injuries or surgeries.
When is eye ultrasound recommended by a doctor?
When the eye cannot be fully examined (for example, due to lens or corneal opacity).
If there is suspicion of trauma or tumors.
To evaluate the condition of the retina and vitreous body.
Before or after eye surgeries.
Contraindications
Eye ultrasound is not performed if the surface of the eye has an open wound or in cases of severe acute eye inflammation.
How to prepare for eye ultrasound?
No special preparation is required. Before the procedure, remove contact lenses, if any, and take off decorative cosmetics.
Eye health – why is regular check-up important?
Many eye diseases initially progress without symptoms. Regular eye examinations and timely diagnostics, including ultrasound, help prevent complications and preserve vision.
