Breast Sonoelastography

Breast Sonoelastography

What is Sonoelastography?

Sonoelastography is a non-invasive and painless diagnostic method based on ultrasound examination of soft tissues. This technique enhances standard ultrasound imaging by using special software that can detect different elasticity patterns in a specific tissue group. This enables a more accurate assessment of the lesion’s nature, shape of malignant tumors, and even early cancer detection. During elastography, increased pressure is applied to the tissues. The main advantage of the method is its high sensitivity.

What is Breast Sonoelastography?

Breast sonoelastography is an advanced ultrasound (USG) examination that allows evaluation of tissue stiffness in addition to standard imaging. It is a non-invasive, painless diagnostic tool that helps distinguish between benign and malignant lesions more accurately.

How is Breast Sonoelastography Performed?

The test is done using a special ultrasound machine with an elastography function. The doctor applies gel to the skin and uses a probe to examine the breast and lymph nodes. In elastography mode, tissue stiffness is assessed using color coding or quantitative measurement. The examination typically takes 15–30 minutes, depending on the individual case and whether additional scans are needed.

What Does Breast Sonoelastography Detect?

Sonoelastography helps determine tissue density and elasticity. These indicators are important in evaluating the nature of various formations—for example, whether they are harder (more typical of malignant processes) or softer (usually benign).

What Can Breast Sonoelastography Diagnose?

It helps diagnose:

  • Benign and malignant breast tumors

  • Fibroadenomas

  • Cysts

  • Inflammatory processes

  • Early signs of breast cancer

Sonoelastography is particularly useful when standard ultrasound does not provide sufficient information.

When is Breast Sonoelastography Recommended?

The examination is advised when:

  • A palpable lump is detected in the breast

  • Suspicious structures are found during previous exams (USG or mammography)

  • There is an increased risk of breast cancer

  • Additional evaluation is needed before biopsy or for monitoring

Contraindications

There are no specific contraindications for breast sonoelastography. It is safe, painless, and does not involve radiation. It can also be performed during pregnancy.

Preparation for Breast Sonoelastography

No special preparation is needed. It is recommended to:

  • Perform the test in the first half of the menstrual cycle (days 5–12), when breast tissue is softer

  • Wear comfortable clothing

  • Bring previous examination results, if available (mammography, ultrasound, biopsy, etc.)

Good to Know

  • Breast health is essential for a woman’s overall well-being

  • Regular self-examinations, preventive check-ups, and timely medical visits help detect changes early

  • Breast sonoelastography is a valuable diagnostic tool, especially for women with dense breast tissue or an increased risk of cancer

Usually, the results are available immediately after the exam. If further data analysis or comparison with previous results is needed, the doctor will inform you about when they will be ready.
