What is sonoelastography?
Sonoelastography is a non-invasive and painless examination method based on soft tissue ultrasound imaging. This technique supplements a standard ultrasound (USG) scan with a special program capable of identifying different elasticity patterns in a specific group of tissues. This makes it possible to more accurately determine the nature of a lesion, the form of a malignant tumor, and detect cancer even in its early stages. During elastography, increased pressure is applied to the tissues. The main advantage of this method is its high sensitivity.
What is thyroid sonoelastography?
Thyroid sonoelastography is a modern, painless, and non-invasive examination that combines a standard thyroid ultrasound with measurement of tissue elasticity. It allows the assessment of thyroid tissue stiffness and helps distinguish benign nodules from malignant formations, thereby reducing the need for unnecessary biopsies.
How is thyroid sonoelastography performed?
The patient lies on their back with the head slightly tilted back to allow free access to the front of the neck. A special ultrasound gel is applied to the skin. Using an ultrasound probe with a sonoelastography function, the doctor performs measurements to determine tissue elasticity and stiffness. The procedure is painless and safe. The examination takes approximately 10–20 minutes.
What can be diagnosed with thyroid sonoelastography?
Sonoelastography helps determine:
The nature of thyroid nodules (benign or suspicious)
The degree of tissue stiffness
Possible malignant processes in the early stage
Changes in nodule structure over time
What does thyroid sonoelastography allow to assess?
More accurate risk evaluation of thyroid nodules
The need for a biopsy
Nodule changes during treatment
Long-term monitoring of thyroid health
When is thyroid sonoelastography recommended?
Thyroid nodules found on ultrasound
Suspected thyroid tumor
Enlarged thyroid gland (goiter)
Changes in thyroid function
Need for follow-up after previous examinations
Contraindications
The examination is safe, radiation-free, and has no side effects; therefore, there are no absolute contraindications.
Preparation for thyroid sonoelastography
No special preparation is required. Wearing clothing with an open neck area is recommended to ensure easy access to the examination site.
If you have previous ultrasound or biopsy results, it is advisable to bring them.
Good to know!
The thyroid gland regulates metabolism and hormonal balance in the body.
Nodules or other formations do not always mean cancer, but they should always be evaluated.
Regular thyroid check-ups are especially important for people with hormonal disorders, a family history of thyroid disease, or persistent symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, or neck swelling.
The results are usually available immediately after the examination. If further data analysis or comparison with previous tests is needed, the doctor will inform you when they will be ready.
Both insurance-covered and paid services are available.
