What is sonoelastography?
Sonoelastography is a non-invasive and painless examination method developed based on soft tissue ultrasound imaging. This technique supplements a standard ultrasound (USG) examination with a special program that can detect different elasticity patterns within a specific tissue group. In this way, it is possible to more accurately determine the nature of a lesion, the form of a malignant tumor, and detect cancer even in its early stages. During elastography, increased pressure is applied to the tissues. The main advantage of this method is its high sensitivity.
What is liver sonoelastography?
Liver sonoelastography is a modern, painless, and non-invasive examination that uses ultrasound technology to measure the elasticity or stiffness of liver tissue. This method helps determine the degree of fibrosis and cirrhosis, allowing liver health assessment without invasive procedures such as biopsy. It is particularly useful for patients with chronic liver diseases.
How is liver sonoelastography performed?
The patient lies on their back with their right arm slightly raised to provide free access to the right upper abdomen. A special ultrasound gel is applied to the skin. An ultrasound probe is used to take measurements that indicate liver tissue stiffness. The procedure is painless and leaves no marks on the skin. The examination usually lasts 10–20 minutes, and the results are available immediately afterward.
What can be diagnosed with liver sonoelastography?
Sonoelastography helps to determine:
The stage of liver fibrosis
The risk of cirrhosis development
The severity of liver damage in chronic diseases
Changes in liver tissue during treatment
What does liver sonoelastography allow to assess?
Early detection of fibrosis before symptoms appear
Objective evaluation of liver tissue elasticity
Monitoring of disease progression or improvement
Assessment of treatment effectiveness
When is this examination recommended?
Chronic hepatitis B or C
Fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis)
Suspected liver fibrosis or cirrhosis
Alcohol- or medication-induced liver damage
Need to monitor liver condition during treatment
Elevated liver enzyme levels in blood tests
Contraindications
The examination is safe and suitable for most patients.
Relative limitations may include:
Pregnancy (only upon doctor’s recommendation)
Acute pain or inflammation in the liver area
Severe heart or respiratory problems that make lying down difficult
Preparation for liver sonoelastography
Do not eat for 4–6 hours before the procedure to reduce gas in the intestines and improve image quality
Drinking plain water is allowed
Inform your doctor about any medications and chronic conditions before the examination
Good to know!
The liver is a vital organ involved in metabolism, detoxification, and energy storage
Many liver diseases progress silently for a long time, so regular screening is essential for at-risk groups
A healthy diet, limiting alcohol, and regular physical activity help maintain liver health
Early diagnosis improves treatment outcomes
The results are usually available immediately after the examination. If additional analysis or comparison with previous results is needed, the doctor will inform you when the final report will be ready.
Both insurance-covered and paid services are available.
