TOTAL EVLT is an innovative endovenous laser ablation method developed at the “Baltijas Vēnu klīnika” branch of “Veselības centrs 4” under the leadership of vascular surgeon Dr. Ints Ūdris. This method raises the standard of vein laser surgery to a new level, providing even gentler, more precise, and more comfortable treatment for patients. TOTAL EVLA enables laser closure of all treatable blood vessels, including vein side branches, without mechanically removing them.
What is TOTAL EVLA?
TOTAL EVLA is an advanced endovenous laser treatment (EVLA) method in which:
A third-generation 1940 nm diode laser is used;
Laser energy is applied to both trunk veins and side branches;
Vein branches are not physically extracted but closed using laser energy;
No surgical incisions are made.
The 1940 nm wavelength laser has approximately 10 times higher absorption in water compared to previously used wavelengths. This allows up to 30% less energy to be used while effectively closing the vein and maximally protecting the surrounding tissues.
How is the TOTAL EVLA procedure performed?
The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance.
The diseased vein is punctured (without incisions).
A laser fiber is inserted into the vein.
Two types of radial fibers are used to close both trunk veins and side branches.
Blood flow is redirected to healthy blood vessels.
Since side branches are not mechanically removed, surrounding tissues are not traumatized, significantly reducing postoperative discomfort.
Advantages of TOTAL EVLA
The procedure is especially gentle
No incisions are made
No hematomas (bruising)
No risk of burns or skin pigmentation
Practically no postoperative pain
All varicose side branches are closed, regardless of their diameter
Short and comfortable recovery period
After the procedure:
Bandages are required for only one night;
Compression stockings need to be worn for only one week;
The patient quickly returns to daily activities.
TOTAL EVLA compared to classical vein surgery
TOTAL EVLA | Classical Surgery |
No incisions | Incisions required |
Veins are not stripped | Side branches are mechanically removed |
Minimal bruising | Frequent hematomas |
Fast recovery | Longer rehabilitation period |
Less postoperative discomfort | Possible pain |
In modern phlebology, minimally invasive methods, including EVLA, have become the gold standard for the treatment of varicose veins in Europe.
Who is TOTAL EVLA suitable for?
The method is suitable for patients with:
Varicose veins;
Chronic venous insufficiency;
Prominent vein side branches;
Leg swelling, heaviness, or pain;
Aesthetically disturbing dilated veins.
An individual treatment plan is determined by a phlebologist after a duplex ultrasound examination.
