Vein Laser Surgery (EVLA)

Vein Laser Surgery (EVLA)

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLA) is the most widely used endoluminal vein ablation method in Europe. It is a safe, effective, and patient-friendly technology for the treatment of varicose veins without classical surgery.

Vein Laser Surgery (EVLA) – Modern and Gentle Treatment of Varicose Veins

At “Baltijas Vēnu klīnika” in Riga, procedures are performed using the latest generation laser technologies, ensuring maximum precision, fast recovery, and minimal postoperative discomfort.

How is vein laser surgery performed?

During the procedure, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein under ultrasound guidance. Laser energy acts on the vein wall, causing it to close. Blood flow is redirected to healthy veins.

Technological advancements have significantly improved treatment outcomes. Initially, shorter wavelength lasers and different types of fibers were used. Today, radial fibers and longer wavelength lasers (1470–1940 nm) are applied. The energy is selectively absorbed by the vein wall, preserving surrounding tissues.

The result: a virtually painless postoperative period and a rapid return to daily activities.

Laser Technologies at “Baltijas Vēnu klīnika”

The clinic uses four high-precision diode laser systems:

  • Eufoton “Lasemar 1500” (1470 nm)

  • Biolitec Radial (1470 nm)

  • Dornier Medtech Medilas D (1470 nm)

  • Third-generation EUFOTON LASEmaR 2000® (1940 nm)

Special emphasis should be placed on the 1940 nm laser, which provides even higher energy absorption in tissues, allowing the procedure to be performed particularly gently, with minimal risk of hematomas and post-procedural pain.

This makes EVLA one of the most advanced vein treatment methods in Latvia and Europe.

EVLA Experience in Latvia

Vein laser procedures were introduced worldwide in 2001. In 2002, under the guidance of German Professor Thomas Proebstle, they were introduced at the Phlebology Center of “Veselības centrs 4” — the first in the Baltic States. Over nearly 25 years, the clinic’s physicians have:

  • Performed more than 20,000 vein laser procedures;

  • Gained extensive experience in treating complex venous pathologies;

  • Significantly reduced the need for classical, more traumatic vein surgeries.

Today, EVLA is one of the most popular varicose vein treatment methods in Riga and Latvia.

Advantages of EVLA

  • Minimally invasive procedure

  • No general anesthesia required

  • Fast recovery

  • Minimal pain and discomfort

  • High long-term effectiveness

  • Excellent aesthetic outcome

Most patients return to daily activities the next day

Who is vein laser surgery suitable for?

EVLA is suitable for patients with:

  • Varicose veins;

  • Chronic venous insufficiency;

  • Leg swelling and heaviness;

  • Leg pain and discomfort;

  • Aesthetically disturbing dilated veins.

The precise treatment plan is determined by a vascular surgeon/phlebologist after a duplex ultrasound examination.
